Prince Harry Says Unconscious Bias Not Overt Racism Runs in the Royal Family
In an interview aired on 60 Minutes, Prince Harry says he never called his family racists but believes that unconscious bias – which he thinks differs from racism – is the real problem. After one of Queen Elizabeth’s ladies-in-waiting apologized and resigned after an inappropriate exchange with a Black guest at Buckingham Palace, Prince Harry claimed that the family had promised to bring in a diversity tsar but that never happened. Prince Harry believes that his family can work on unconscious bias and that the encounter between the former lady in waiting and the woman of color was a good example of the environment with the royal family.
Virgin Islands Attorney General Fired After Suing JPMorgan Chase
Denise George, the former Virgin Islands AG who won a $105 million settlement from the estate of Jeffrey Epstein, was fired on New Year’s Eve – four days after her office sued JPMorgan Chase in federal court in Manhattan for its dealings with Epstein. George defended her decision to sue the bank and the work her office had done to make sure the dozens of women who were victims of Epstein’s abuse, teenagers or young adults were appropriately compensated. “Our pursuit of justice must continue. No institution, organization or person should be off-limits, no matter how wealthy or powerful,” George said.
Immigrants Need Clear Guidelines That Will Define Pathway to Citizenship
President Biden’s visit to El Paso over the weekend illustrated the many problems with America’s immigration policy. El Paso and many other border cities are struggling to handle a surge of immigrants. Thousands more men, women and children predominantly from Central America and Brazil are currently trapped near the Mexican border where a humanitarian crisis is looming. During the last five months, more than 12,000 immigrants have reached Florida by sea from Caribbean nations predominately Cuba and Haiti. Both nations are suffering from widespread crime, starvation and poor economies. According to one advocate, people in Cuba are probably getting by on one or two meals per day. Conditions for many Haitians are thought to be even worse.
XBB.1.5 Variant Could Usher In Winter COVID Wave
Hailed as “the most transmissible” variant ever, states like New York have already begun recommending that people wear masks in public indoor spaces as well as in crowded outside spaces. The Center for Disease Control reports that more than 25 percent of U.S. cases diagnosed during the first week of January, 2023 were related to this newest variant. In the Northeast, more than 70 percent of cases are thought to be of XXB.1.5. At that rate, the variant could reach Louisiana just in time for Mardi Gras. There is no evidence just yet that this variant is more deadly than its predecessors. Health officials are urging citizens to get the latest booster dose of the vaccine to reduce their chances of catching XXB.1.5.
Second Gentleman Emhoff To Address Anti-Semitism
With antisemitism on the rise globally, second gentleman Doug Emhoff, husband of VP Kamala Harris, will visit the Auschwitz-Birkenau memorial in Poland on January 27, International Holocaust Remembrance Day. His visit is part of a larger effort to address antiseminitism on an international level. Emhoff will be joined by Deborah Lipstadt, the U.S. special envoy to monitor and combat antisemitism.
