Only a short time ago, Senator Bill Cassidy was one of only seven Republican senators to vote convict Donald Trump. After already being censured by the East Baton Rouge Republican Party for his previous vote to continue the impeachment trial, he has now also been censured by the LAGOP Executive Committee which represents the state Republican Party.
In a short statement the LAGOP wrote, “The Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Louisiana has voted to unanimously censure Senator Bill Cassidy for his vote cast earlier to convict former President Donald J. Trump on the impeachment charge.”
In a brief Facebook post lasting a mere ten seconds, Cassidy explained his vote saying, “Our Constitution and our country are more important than any one person. I voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty.”
According to the United States Senate a censure is, “Less severe than expulsion, a censure (sometimes referred to as condemnation or denouncement) does not remove a senator from office. It is a formal statement of disapproval…”
Along with the seven Republicans that voted to convict Trump, all 50 Democrats voted for conviction as well.
Louisiana’s other senator, Republican Senator John Neely Kennedy, a former Democrat, voted not to convict Trump.
