Former Democratic candidate for governor of Georgia and voting rights champion Stacey Abrams tweeted her endorsement of Louisiana State Senator and former Louisiana Democratic Party Chair Karen Carter Peterson for Louisiana’s second U.S. congressional district seat.

“I am proud to endorse my friend Karen Carter Peterson in her bid to represent Louisiana’s 2nd congressional district,” Abrams wrote. “Senator Peterson has been a champion for justice in the Louisiana Senate and will continue to be so in the U.S. House fighting for COVID-19 relief, voting rights and more.”

In an email to Peterson’s supporters, Abrams wrote “Next up is Louisiana, where a key congressional election is taking place that will determine whether or not we can keep our progressive momentum going. Karen has spent her career as a passionate and relentless fighter for working families in Louisiana’s Republican-led state legislature. If we’re going to plant the seeds that can flip this state one day, we start by electing progressives like Karen Carter Peterson who can engage and mobilize the grassroots.”

Former Louisiana Democratic Party Executive Director Stephen Handwerk touted Abrams’ endorsement in a tweet, writing “Wow! The BEST part of waking up is a rockstar endorsement in your inbox!”

The endorsement comes on the heels of another major national endorsement from Howard Dean, former Chair of the Democratic National Committee.

Peterson is running for the seat that is being vacated by Congressman Cedric Richmond who was selected to serve as a senior adviser in President-elect Joe Biden’s administration.

Other announced candidates in the special election include Baton Rouge activist Gary Chambers and Louisiana state Sen. Troy Carter.

The special election date is set for March 20, 2021. March 6 to 14 is the early voting period.
