Nyx Captain Says “All Lives Matter,” Issues Apology Amid Criticism

As Black Lives Matter protests have spread worldwide following the murder of George Floyd, the Mystic Krewe of Nyx, which touts itself as a diverse and inclusive Mardi Gras organization, repeated the same right wing trope of “All Lives Matter.”

The photo, which depicts a black and white child embracing, also says “Our souls are the same color” – doubling down on the colorblind narrative designed to derail a movement for African Americans.

Yesterday, Tracey’s Irish Channel Bar sustained heavy criticism for a May 30 Facebook comment in response to the peaceful protests that took place in New Orleans on the same date.

The screenshot, which was taken from the Krewe of Nyx’s Instagram page, quickly spread across social media, accompanied by negative criticism. This prompted the Captain of the Krewe of Nyx to issue an apology

“Nyx touts itself as an ‘ all women’ krewe yet denies membership to trans women. One of the founders is an ex-cop,” Twitter user @fahEvaEva said. “This is 100% expected from them.”

“Mystic Krewe of Nyx is CANCELLED,” Twitter user @ShawnieceQB said.

This is not the first time the Krewe of Nyx has come under controversy. In 2019, the New Orleans Advocate reported that a local chef caught a Confederate flag bead at Nyx.

The Krewe captain, Julie Lea, issued a statement denouncing the throw and promised to kick out the member identified.

Today, Ms. Lea, who is a former NOPD officer, of the Krewe of Nyx issued an apology on Twitter in a press release.

“In an effort to be a voice of unity, I fell short with my fellow sisters. . . . I now realize, no matter how it is used, “All Lives Matter” is divisive and tone deaf. I acknowledge and take full responsibility for my own lack of knowledge,” the statement reads in part.

  1. I don’t see anything wrong with this. It is true. All lives do matter. We all bleed the same. We all are created in the image of God.

    1. No Becca. We dont all bleed the same. Black people bleed more. A lot more. Because they are aggressively and systematically targetted by racist systems. Mass Incarceration. Education. Housing. Whites are born into privilege while black folks are born into a racist system. The only reason you dont get it is due to your privilege. But through empathy, you can try to put yourself in another’s shoes. And for one moment, imagine the fear and pain black folks experience every day due to our racist society.
Black folks are being mass incarcerated for crimes white folks get away with. They are shot at like its a goddam sport by those we rely on to protect and serve.
All Lives Do Not Matter to our society! White lives are valued more highly. Black lives are sacrificed for white people’s comfort or jobs, like in Cancer Alley, along the Mississippi. Their nieghborhoods are bulldozed to make way for freeways and any industry whites profit from. Meanwhile black folsk are thrown in the slammer and murdered by police and white folks do not care one iota!!!

So don’t you dare say All Lives Matter because you are repeating a rightwing trope that is an attempt of the privileged to minimize and dismiss the fact that black lives are being taken as if they dont matter one iota.
Its a hurtful, insensitive, and tone deaf thing to repeat.

      Dont repeat it.
Do you save the lives of every plant and animal you come across? Do yiu eat meat? Do crawfish lives matter?
No they dont. But black lives do. White people have a long history of treating black lives like animals:those to be used, exploited, and discarded. So stop saying it please!!!!

      1. That is possibly the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. Please provide any statistical evidence that blacks are targeted. You can’t because it’s not true. Black lives only matter to people who have something to gain from it. All lives matter, all the time.
