It’s Tax Day – Here’s What You Need to Know

The time for procrastinating on those taxes is over. Today is the last day to file your 2018 taxes before facing penalties.

According to USA Today, the IRS had only received about two-thirds of the individual returns expected as of April 6. For the rest of you, it’s time to hustle.

If you’re mailing in your federal return, it will be considered on time if it is correctly addressed, has the right amount of postage, and is postmarked by today. For Louisiana residents, the address you will want to use is:

If you are NOT enclosing a payment:

Department of the Treasury
Internal Revenue Service
Austin, TX 73301-0002

If you ARE enclosing a payment:

Internal Revenue Service
P.O. Box  1214
Charlotte, NC 28201-1214

You will need to have your envelope weighed at the post office to ensure that you have the right amount of postage (you’ll likely need more than one stamp) – and be prepared for some lines at the post office. You may want to call your post office to see what time they pick up mail to ensure your return is postmarked today.

Today is also the last day to file an amended return for your 2015 taxes. You may need to file an amendment if your employer made a mistake on your W-2, if you used the wrong filing status, or if you missed an important credit or deduction.

Can’t make the deadline? Today is the last day to file for a six-month extension as well. Most tax prep companies will allow you to file an extension for free online. Otherwise, you can download and fill out a Form 4868 and mail it to the IRS. A word of caution, however: if you owe money, you still have to pay your estimated tax bill by the end of today.
