What Is Lyocell & Why It’s Perfect for Summer

Summer is here and we’re all seeking looks that will keep us stylish while beating the heat. As we contend with the increasing temperatures, we all want to look fresh and comfortable while strolling around in the scorching heat. For such days, you probably reach for a t-shirt and loose pants or a floaty skirt.

However, you need to be careful with the material your tee is made of, as many items these days are made of unbreathable polyester and acrylics. The solution is plain and simple: Lyocell. This clever fabric does the trick and helps you stand the heat in unbearably hot temperatures.

What is Lyocell?

Lyocell is a semi-synthetic fabric that is made from rayon, which in turn is made from cellulose extracted from wood pulp. First commercialized in 1990, this innovative fabric has garnered a lot of popularity in recent years as it is a great sustainable alternative to traditional fabrics. Because it is made from wood pulp, it is naturally biodegradable.

This energy-efficient fabric has no harmful by-products and is also non-toxic, so it’s not surprising that it’s a favorite of sustainable fashion enthusiasts. Lyocell is a smooth fabric that is highly breathable, making it perfect for hot summers.

Properties and Benefits of Lyocell

Lyocell is a soft, breathable, and silky fabric ideal for warm weather as it keeps you cool and dry in hot and humid conditions. These attributes make it perfect for activewear, casual wear, intimates, and even household textiles.

Efficient in Moisture Regulation

Lyocell supports the body’s thermal regulation and is ultra-breathable. The textile is made up of cellulose fibers that are structured to regulate the release and absorption of moisture. Because moisture is wicked away from the fabric, there is a less favorable environment for bacterial growth, making the fabric very hygienic.

Super Light

Lyocell is also extremely lightweight. This helps you to stay comfortable in hot weather, as it’s almost as if you’re wearing nothing at all! This makes light and breezy Lyocell ideal for summer wear.

Less Transparent

Sure, you could wear a camisole or a vest underneath your cotton t-shirt because it’s too transparent, but do you really want that extra layer in summer? You won’t have to worry about this problem with Lyocell because this fabric is relatively opaque.

Gentle on the Skin

Lyocell also offers a very smooth touch and feel. It won’t stick to your skin, instead it will gently glides over your skin. This gentle fabric will never feel uncomfortable or suffocating and it won’t irritate the skin.

Flexible

Lyocell is used in upholstery, home textiles, bedding, and for a range of other purposes because of its flexibility. This fabric has a high degree of stretch and elasticity which is why it’s often used to make activewear and loungewear.

Wrinkle-Resistant

Another advantage of fabric is that it does not wrinkle easily. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about creases on your Lyocell items and probably won’t even need to iron them.

High tenacity

This fabric is known for its tenacity and strength. Many lightweight fabrics are not used for clothing manufacture because they tear easily. However, the cellulose fibers in the Lyocell prevent it from breaking or ripping.

Care for Lyocell

You have to be very careful when you are caring for Lyocell because even though this fabric has great tenacity, it will start to show signs of wear if you don’t care for it properly. Treat this fabric as delicate and it will last a lifetime.

  • Make sure you wash Lyocell on a gentle cycle and keep the temperature low when machine drying.Either hand-wash it or opt for a gentle machine cycle. Avoid twisting the fabric when it’s wet.
  • It is a good idea to air dry Lyocell because this avoids twisting the fabric or direct exposure to high heat.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals and strong detergents to remove tough stains. You should use oxygen bleach instead of chlorine bleach to protect the Lyocell fibers.
  • As the fabric does not crease easily, you can use a steamer instead of an iron, or iron at low heat. For additional protection, place a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric when ironing.

Sustainability of the Fabric

Many well-known brands such as Celtic and Co are adopting Lyocell not only for its range of other benefits and advantages, but also because of its sustainability. The fabric is eco-friendly because it is made from renewable wood pulp. Additionally, it is biodegradable, meaning that it won’t contribute to the world’s waste problem.

Final Thoughts

Lyocell is a lightweight, luxurious fabric that offers the perfect mix of fashion and comfort. Even on a warm, sunny day, you will feel cool and comfortable as well as stylish. This fabric is not only sustainable, but also durable, breathable, lightweight, and gentle on the skin.
