Women Owned and Operated Businesses: Critical to New Orleans

I feel lucky to have found other female entrepreneurs all over this city to inspire my efforts. All of these said entrepreneurs have dealt with setbacks and tribulations connected to their gender. Though they don’t deserve an ounce of their adversity, all of the women I spoke with push through these times, and work to keep themselves, and fellow females standing tall.

It’s no secret that the roads in New Orleans are in bad shape. Drive a few blocks in any direction, and you’ll come across one of the city’s famous, “car-killer” potholes. Every few weeks, a story pops up - usually something humorous about the way a local has attempted to draw the city’s attention to the problem on their street.


Coffee Culture Playing Poorly in New Orleans

Visit any of the Big Easy’s coffee shops and you’ll find a hub of activity: tourists looking for the coffee and beignets in the French Quarter, busy executives and employees in the CBD in for their morning pick-me-up, artists looking for inspiration in the afternoon, and of course, hospitality and service industry workers needing a jolt to get through their long day. New Orleans coffee shops are busier than ever. Unfortunately, the profits those shops make don’t always translate to better salaries for the hardworking shop employees.

It’s the same for many cities, but for such a small city, New Orleans has a large number of them, and not just on Bourbon Street.

In June of 2016, Entergy closed its steam electric Michoud plant at 12550 Old Gentilly Road, after being in commercial production since 1957. Entergy decided they wanted to build another plant in the same place, using the same resources. In a world that’s turning towards wind and solar, Entergy decided to go with natural gas.

But to the nearly 80 percent of Americans who are still living paycheck to paycheck, those numbers and victory laps can feel a like a slap in the face. How is it that a large portion of the U.S. population is getting left behind in this age of prosperity?
