Editor’s Note: This piece has been changed to remove an op-ed comment regarding Brees’ relationship with LGBT icon Ellen. Brees has now issued a statement regarding this video, which you can view here.

On Thursday, August 29 the anti-LGBTQ+ religious group Focus on the Family released a video featuring none other than Saints star quarterback, Drew Brees.

The short video features Brees encouraging children to participate in the group’s “Bring Your Bible to School Day” on October 3, presumably so that they can “live their faith” by “sharing God’s love” and attempting to convert their fellow students at school. It’s no secret that Brees is a Christian, so the fact that he would record such a video likely isn’t much of a surprise.

What is surprising is the anti-bullying advocate‘s support of a religious group known to be one of the most well funded anti-LGBT organizations in the country. Focus on the Family supports and promotes the practice of “conversion therapy,” which uses a combination of shaming, emotionally manipulative and traumatic stimuli, and physically painful stimuli in order to “cure” LGBTQ+ people of their sexual orientation. According to The Trevor Project, more than 700,000 LGBTQ+ people have been subjected to conversion therapy, in spite of the fact that the American Psychiatric Association discredited the practice and hasn’t classified homosexuality as a mental illness since 1973.

According to the American Psychiatric Association, “the potential risks of reparative therapy are great, including depression, anxiety, and self-destructive behavior, since therapist alignment with societal prejudices against homosexuality may reinforce self-hatred already experienced by the patient.” In addition, the Pan American Health Organization, which is a regional office of the World Health Organization has stated that conversion therapy “lack[s] medical justification and represent[s] a serious threat to the health and well-being of affected people.”

As noted by The Trevor Project:

Conversion therapy amplifies the shame and stigma so many LGBT young people already experience. Parents who send their child to conversion therapy instill feelings of family rejection and disappointment and risk seriously fracturing their relationship with their child. In a study by San Francisco State University, lesbian, gay and bisexual youth who were rejected by their families and caregivers due to their identities were nearly six times more likely to report high levels of depression and more than eight times more likely to have attempted suicide when compared to youth from accepting and affirming families and caregivers. Few practices hurt LGBTQ youth more than attempts to change their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In addition to their support of a practice that could be considered a picture-perfect example of institutionalized bullying, Focus on the Family has also regularly fought against anti-discrimination practices protecting the LGBTQ+ community. In Colorado, they launched an ad campaign against Governor Bill Ritter and other state legislators who were in support of a nondiscrimination bill. In Alaska, the group sent out robocalls urging residents to support an amendment nullifying same-sex partner employment benefits, and they support business owners who want to turn away LGBTQ+ customers, saying their religion “requires them to oppose [LGBTQ+ people’s] very existence.”

Interestingly, the video Brees filmed for Focus on the Family was hidden from the group’s Facebook timeline shortly after it was published. However, it remains available on smaller church pages who have shared it, as well as on the group’s YouTube channel. This might lead fans to believe that perhaps Brees wasn’t aware of who he was supporting. However, research shows that this is a long term partnership:

“Appreciating people for how they’re different from you – that’s what it takes to be a friend,” Brees said in his anti-bullying video featured on The Ellen Show. His anti-bullying stance once saw him named the LGBTQ+ icon’s “favorite quarterback.” This seems an odd group for a person who espouses those views to support.

  1. Wow! I normally don’t take the time to respond to such poorly written articles, except when this one has been purported to be actual news. It’s hard to say much about this article which tries to denigrate Drew Brees. You apparently care so much about your ’cause’ that you have closed your mind to any other viewpoint. Not very ‘progressive’ or ‘liberal’ at all, of you. Focus on the Family is a pro-family advocacy group that under James Dobson’s leadership has benefitted tens of millions of people. Just because Drew Brees makes a video that they use to promote Bible literacy, you judge his heart. Hmmm, fascinating that you have that uncanny ability, isn’t it.

In doing all of this, you try to diminish a much needed message by Drew Brees: Finding hope and strength in adversity- the very message your readers need, I would imagine. If you really knew anything about the Brees family (as I do), you would know that you have mis-characterized him and his intentions. Unbelievable. But, then again, journalism is dead, as you have demonstrated.

    1. Focus on the Family is a hate group, and anyone who supports them supports their bigotry, their hatred, and their goal of eradicating, if not killing, queer people. Enjoy hell when you get there, you homophobic piece of trash.

I pity for your children, and whatever unfortunate woman has the bad sense to marry your hateful ass.

      1. spoken like a faithful follower of Christ,,,not! I will pray for you. I am gay always have and will always be attracted to women. In returning to my faith I understand now being gay is not in God’s plan.Listen to 690 am for a while!!!Lika a year or two.I believe the Catholic faith is the truth. I will stand by my faith.

      2. So in your point of view, Brees is the big anti everything because he is promote bring the bible to school with a group that belives in a weird and untrue therapy ? If your wear a t-shirt that is a American Flag on it that means you are pro Trump? If you live in United States of America your are automatically a Trump supporter or agree with everything he

      3. If you say that we’re being “hateful” towards these kinds of people, then you haven’t realized the hatefulness you’re showing by saying that, especially in your last paragraph. It’s quite hypocritical.

      1. Mistress? What mistress? I think you are very misinformed. Who did Dobson have an affair with? When?

I believe you are referring to a 2012 comment he made about Newt Gingrich’s wife Callista Gringrich and Rick Santourm.

BTW Brees is no more a Homophobe or a bigot for doing a the video as he is ProGay for being on Ellen’s tv show numerous times

Man no wonder I dont read the stuff written on this site other than this one article.

Editor? So lets publish the article and not wait for a response from Drew. He has to respond right away or else!!! We are waiting for him to defend himself!! Perfect timing at his busiest time of the year. The start of football season

        Misleading and misinformed site.

    2. I totally agree with your comments. Nothing was wrong with Drew Bree’s message. It’s ok to agree to disagree but it isn’t necessary to down play a persons right to opinion.

    3. I agree with you, the author is closed minded and intolerant of Christian’s. As Christians, we love all people whether saint or sinner.

  2. He’s supported them since 2010,and their anti LGBTQ stance hasn’t been hidden..They are pro-“conversion therapy” as well. We can’t make excuses for local heroes when it comes to this kind of thing… No one is beyond bigotry, especially in these modern times we live..

    1. Like your bigotry against truth and those who disagree with you.
No doubt you hate Chick-fil-A, huh?

You disagree with someone, you slander them. You’re the bigot.

  3. Doug Husen, since you are apparently such good friends with the Brees family, maybe you should encourage Drew to make his own comment on this issue and his stance on these serious LGBT issues such as whether or not he is a believer of conversion therapy, whether or not he supports same sex marriage and benefits, etc. Speaking as someone who has always had a great respect for Drew Brees, this saddens me. And I would personally like to see some comment from HIM – not you!

    1. Oh puh-leeze. Drew Brees is a football player. He does not owe anyone an explanation of his beliefs on conversion therapy, LGBT issues or on anything else for that matter. Get over yourself.

  4. Wow Jenn,
Great job on creating hate and discontent. **See above comments. Are you proud of yourself for being part of the problem instead of the solution? Be praying for you. Reminder: you don’t speak for the masses. Just yourself. Be praying for you. #istandwithdrew #istandwithFoF

  5. All corporations and religious organizations have good and bad sides. If everyone was so dedicated to their principles they would never shop or follow any religion or leave the house. You can pick apart any and all of them, Catholics, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Target, Walmart, Focus on the Family, etc. I think Drew was giving a positive message and like his poor jewelry judgement, maybe it was another mistake on his choices, but I believe his intentions are good and he accepts everyone for who they are. Everyone is so judgy these days. Get out and help people, stop hating behind keyboards and being hypocrites. There are more important issues in this world besides someone giving a 2 minute anti bullying message for a group that has issues. Every group has issues, get over yourselves. Everyone is so self righteous with social media..chillax, live your life and don’t throw stones. If Drew came out and said he hates gays and gay marriage that would be something to scream about.

  6. Typical liberal response to anyone who dares not agree 100% with their twisted views is to attack them and slander their good name. Funny how such an ultra tolerant group can have zero tolerance for anyone who disagrees with them. This is proven day in and day out….. let that sink in.

  7. Fake News piece trying to takedown a popular New Orleans hero in order to promote this new magazine. I encourage everyone that reads their Facebook post to report it for hate speech against religion, or simply false news…

  8. Wow…so you are slandering Brees for promoting to love others and for students to love their friends while you (a person of equality) promote hating Brees or anyone who has different beliefs than you. Kind of hypocritical isn’t it? You’ll never see Brees write or say anything hateful about anyone. But here you are writing hateful things and slandering his name. I would advise all to question who the one filled with hate is.

  9. @Big Easy Magazine – You are getting completely off track. The intent is to get believers to Bring their Bible to school. Period. Why not just state your real opposition? Your true opposition is about sharing Christianity. However, it’s much easier and much more cowardly to make this about something political, so everyone begins arguing, calling each other names, and slandering a man. Are you that afraid someone may actually take their Bible to School and someone who needs Jesus (you know, someone who needs some hope, love and truth) may actually open it and read it??? I think you are!

  10. Here’s what the fascists homosexual crowd needs to understand…people are tired of your hate and hypocritical CRAP. I haven’t heard a peep from you dweebs when Ben Watson was a Saint…he was an African American and a conservative Christian. You freaks didn’t have the guts to attack him, because you’d open yourselves up to being called racists…which is what you are ANYWAY!!! You too much the cowards to attack NFL Muslim players whose ideology is way more anti-alphabet people than Focus on the Family ever will be…but, you don’t because you’re COWARDS. Ultimately, the homosexual fascists real fight is not with man, but God and his inspired work in the Holy Bible. In the end you WILL LOSE!

  11. I watched this video which you claim shows Drew Brees as a supporter of an anti-LGBTQ. For the life of me, after viewing it several times, I still can’t discern the part about him being such a person?? All I see is a message about “Bringing Your Bible To School Day”.

As a born-again evangelical Christian I am a firm believer in the teachings of Jesus Christ, and He said the two greatest commandments are [briefly] to Love the Lord God most of all and to Love your neighbor as you love yourself. Think about what the second part REALLY means: no person who loves him/herself would hate or harm another. Jesus never condemned sinners [remember the parable about the adulteress caught in the act?], BUT He DID condemn hypocrites [HINT, HINT].

I belong to a well-known bible-believing, evangelical church which has quite a few homosexual and lesbian [including couples] attendees. Does that make us more or less Christian? The answer is simple: it means we practice what Jesus preached. It is not our position to judge other people for their beliefs or practices but, rather, we are commanded to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

Your magazine would be better served by practicing those precepts rather than publishing libelous statements about a man who practices what Jesus preached and loves his neighbor as he loves himself.

  12. Seems to me that most of the anti-Drew Brees crowd here are the haters and fascists. They demand 100% conformity with their world view or be labeled accordingly. Sorry, it no longer works. Go ahead and rant, you are not changing hearts and minds with you vitriol.

  13. Thank you for your reporting. The evidence clearly speaks for itself and the truth.
Sadly Drew Brees has been part of the anti-LGBT hate group Focus on the Family for at least nine years and has intentionally tried to keep it on the downlow.
Yesterday he put out a video “setting the record straight,” but Brees did not disavow his association with them; their anti-LGBT hate; or their promoting of debunked and harmful conversion therapy.
By being the face of a hate group, he is normalizing their homophobia.
Drew Brees’ actions speak louder than his hollow words.

    1. Y’all should be ashamed of y’all selves. It’s the same lgbqt community that bashes their own kind and anyone else around them at all times. Grow up. We are not children and everything said should not affect our outlook at life. To bash someone who has thoroughly helped the community for 15+ years is a disgrace. To the person that wrote this; I hope you have someone that tries to destroy your published over ignorance and it works. You have a job that pays a bare minimum to make sure that you spread rumors like the peasant you are. Find real news and spread positivity. Don’t be that much of a sheep that you have to find ever small issue in life. Disgraceful, distasteful and absolutely ignorant. You my friend, whoever wrote this article, are the reason why hatred spreads and at the end of the day will be lost and forgotten because of your fairytale beliefs with no fact. I hope your family suffers the same way if not worse than what his will because of your stupidity and pressing hate towards anyone that doesn’t believe in what you do. Grow up.. millineal

  14. You people are disguisting and even moreso for your reaction to his clarification about his love for our Lord and Jesus and his love for others. You need to reevaluate your priorities trying to demonize such a loving person…oh I know how DARE he be a white straight male? If hes not marganalized he doesn’t count. The tide is changing and this reverse racism as is bad as ANY racism. Hope your magazine goes out of business so you can’t spread your hate

  15. Big Easy Magazine is guided daily by the following core values:

  16. I’m a New Orleanian, and I know Drew Brees to be a man of honor, integrity, truth and courage. He is also a man of faith who strongly believes in giving back to the community. It’s reprehensible that haters pursuing an ideological agenda would attempt to smear and malign this man, but I suppose we shouldn’t be surprised. It’s what leftists do. They lie, defame and slander. They require diversity on the outside but require groupthink on the inside, and will vilify and attempt to crush anyone not part of their lockstep. They have only their hate to hold on to, and they hate people of faith with a vengeance.

  17. This article illustrates the absurdity of the progressive social justice mob. Should people avoid aligning themselves with or patronizing any organization unless they 100% support every one of that organization’s beliefs? How many of our associations, memberships, and stores we frequent would survive such a standard? It’s ridiculous and a witch hunt mentality that will only self-destruct over time.

Projecting all of Focus on the Family’s views back onto Brees is patently unfair, and reflects poorly on your ‘journalism.’ It is sheer laziness and is also not far from anti-Christian bigotry. The view that homosexuality is wrong is a deeply held belief for many people, and it is not unreasonable, despite your screed.

  18. Drew has been associated with this group for years and now it’s a surprise to him that they are an anti-gay group? So his excuse is that he’s … a dumb jock?

  19. Thank you to big easy magazine for some unbiased reporting. The New Orleans media is usually pretty conservative and worship Drew like he’s the second coming of Jesus Christ. Some balance is helpful.

  20. It seems like Drew wants to have his cake and eat it too. He wants to prevent bullying and be supportive of gays, but at the same time support organizations that are anti-gay. You can’t have it both ways.I may buy his excuse that the video he made for focus on the family only related to encouraging kids to read the Bible and not promoting focus on the family’s anti-gay stuff. But I think that’s a little short-sighted of Drew to think that focus on the family’s anti-gay lobbying and rhetoric wouldn’t eventually catch up with him.

  21. Dobson, the leader of focus on the family has written that most gay men are child molesters. that’s how focus on the family, one of many ways, it has earned it’s anti-gay reputation. So exactly who’s doing the smearing– “leftists” or focus on the family. It seems like it’s focus on the family that’s bearing false witness against neighbors. A violation of one of the ten commandments. Perhaps focus on the family should concern itself with following the ten commandments rather than lying about 5% of America’s population.

  22. This is just another example of the far left using propaganda to make Christians are the worst people but in the process just show themselves to be hypocrites and living in a complete fantasy world. I hope the left keeps doing what they are doing because they are going to guarantee that Trump is president for 4 more years. I’m willing to bet that Trump wins both the electoral and the popular vote in 2020 and it’s all because the Democrats have nobody that even stands a chance.
