Weekend Picks: Beyond the Mardi Gras Parades


Carnival is in full swing, and there are plenty of things to do across the New Orleans metro area. This week, we’re focusing beyond the parades with other Mardi Gras themed events and entertainment for you to enjoy.

Friday, Feb 22

National Margarita Day at Felipe’s Taqueria 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Did you know that Friday is National Margarita Day? What better way to celebrate than with 2 for 1 margaritas and some great food at Felipe’s?

Family Gras – 5:00 p.m. to 11:15 p.m.

Bring the kids to this free event being held at the Clearview Center in Metairie! Enjoy art, parades, a Kids’ Court, outdoor concerts, and more. On Friday night, the featured musician will be John Oats.

Big Easy Sisters Beer Bust – 9 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.

Join the Big Easy Sisters in raising money for local charities with their bi-monthly beer bust! $10 all-you-can-drink draft beer and $1 Jell-o shots will be available at the Phoenix bar on Elysian Fields Ave.

Saturday, Feb. 23

Orpheus Open House – 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Come out to Mardi Gras World and preview the floats for the 2019 Orpheus parade! Food and drink will be available, and there will be a marching band performance as well.

New Orleans Pelicans vs LA Lakers – 6 p.m.

It’s Mardi Gras Madness at the Smoothie King Center as the New Orleans Pelicans take on the Los Angeles Lakers. The first 8,000 fans attending will take home exclusive Mardi Gras beads provided courtesy of Smoothie King.

Peace in the Streets Movement – 6 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Mardi Gras is all about bringing the community together, and this event fits right in. The P.I.T.S Movement honors the memory of Louis David III. This event focuses on bring social awareness to the fore by providing positive role models, various organizations, and providing structured activities to bring the community together. Come out and support a great cause.

Sunday, Feb 24

Hands off Venezuela Forum – 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Okay, this one isn’t Mardi Gras themed, but we wouldn’t be the “Unapologetically Progressive” publication you love if we didn’t include this event. This forum is hosted by the New Orleans Workers Group at Cafe Istanbul and will discuss the current situation and learn how to get involved in the #HandsOffVenezuela movement.

Mardi Gras Business Bash Popup – 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Come out and support some of New Orleans’ small businesses at this popup! Come out and shop, eat, network and more. The event takes place in the 3500 block of St. Claude Ave.

The Academy Awards Watching Party – 6 p.m. 

Of course, Mardi Gras parades and parties aren’t the only things that are happening this weekend. On Sunday, head over to the Prytania Theater for their Academy Awards watch party! Food and drink are included, so get your tickets now.
